God- Wilderness Cry- Hilary L Hunt MD

You might gasp in astonishment at such a statement–how could I say such a thing?  I am easily allowed that privilege by virtue of my knowledge of the derivation of a concept of God in the first instance. Without the least explanation of , or attempt at essential definition of, God just burst forth from the pages of Genesis. We are told that God created the universe—in fact, we are given a choice of our liking as to the exact order in which He accomplished the feat. We also are lead to believe that God was stern and unforgiving—break My rules and suffer the dire consequences forever. Mind you, that’s not my story–it’s in the bible. Now, of course, the bible was written by people who had extreme imaginations. They seemingly interpreted events in their lives as direct interference of their God, both good and bad, as consequences of their activities. In due time, they conjured up events and consequences of literally every type and description, but usually with negative outcomes. Their God seemed to be in a constant state of morosity. They reasoned that appeasement by way of sacrificial offerings was not only desirable but absolutely necessary. Consequently there was a sin/peace offering designed for every conceivable breach of God’s law. Now fast-forward to Jesus—what an uproar He caused. How could anyone in his right mind even consider speaking of God’s love. Worse yet, loving one’s neighbor as self, and doing good to those who hate you, was such hypocrisy as to justify death by crucifixion. Before He died, however, Jesus explained to His followers that His Spirit and the Spirit of His Father permeated everything in the universe. He explained to them that his Spirit was in the bread they were eating. He asked them to remember that fact each time they ate, thereby promoting a memory and an attitude of thanksgiving for His sacrificial death of salvation for them and every evil in the universe.  Now since that time, all sorts of meanings and interpretations of Jesus’ words and action have been justified by innumerable groups who altered the Holy writings to suit their fancy—we now have at least 33,000 known such groups, each claiming absolute authenticity. How can that possibly be??? The answer is extremely simple on the one hand and complicated on the other. It is simple because no two people who ever existed have had the same idea about just Who this God they were worshiping and talking about was/is—complicated, because each group was/is constantly attempting to gain “converts” to its way of thinking for one simple combined reason; power, money, control. Years ago, I recognized that problem of worshiping an undefined deity. It took a while, but finally it struck me. As I observed the perfect order in our universe, it became very clear to me that such perfection could not be achieved by a grizzled, morose, old man sitting on a throne in some unknown place. Such perfection could possibly be only the direct result of a perfect Intellect. Therefore, I was allowed and compelled to define the essence of our Supreme Being (GOD) as follows–GOD IS A PERFECT RATIONAL BEING. That definition says it all. God knows all, created all, maintains all, and is all. God is Perfect Love which means Its acceptance is complete without conditions. Jesus (God’s image) atoned for our iniquities. Being Perfect in all respects means simply that no change in God is possible– God’s mind cannot possibly be changed; God cannot possibly be pleased nor displeased. With that understanding, all the nonsensical, astronomically expensive religions and their practices are are ill advised and totally”miss the mark”. All the endless prayers of petition asking God to satisfy our selfish desires are ludicrous. Our only justifiable prayer is “THANK YOU LORD GOD, JESUS AND HOLY SPIRIT (WILL OF GOD). Amen. I might and must add that as Christians, we speak of God as our Supreme Being–Allah, Yahweh, Buddha, Brahma etc are the same Supreme Being—there can be only One Supreme Being.
