GUILTY: Without any doubt, no word in the English Language better describes the “human condition”. It has been the mainstay of religion and law since the Hebrew days of Moses. During their trek through the desert in Exodus, the Hebrews grew weary and impatient with God because of their miserable plight. So they  followed the example of their Egyptian captors and began worshiping idols. Moses was distraught, because plainly, he had lost control. In response, God made him two stone tablets with 10 commandments inscribed. When presented with such “nonsense”, the Israelites just laughed at Moses and went their merry way. Being extremely angered, Moses goes up the mountain and God gives him a fresh set. This time Moses presents them with threats of extreme consequences if ignored again.  They repented for a while and fell in line. However, as human nature goes, it didn’t take long for law breakers to appear and, of course, punishment ensued. Now since that time, the legal system of the civilized (?) Western world has been, and still is, “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”. That same system has been used by religion for control and extortion of the faithful. Nothing works better than setting a big steak before a starving man, then dare him to touch it. One very astute Catholic Theologian noted that all one has to do to control a man is to grab him by the crotch with one hand and by the throat with the other. That is exactly what organized religion has done since the time of Moses. We all have been made “guilty” by default. As explained by the church, the only way to exonerate yourself, is to give everything you own to the church. You might even shorten your time in Purgatory by buying Indulgences; once upon a time, many did out of desperation; “it is easier for a camel to pass through a needle’s eye than for a ‘rich man’ to get to heaven”. So The entire human society has been artificially made ‘guilty’ ostensibly for POWER, MONEY, CONTROL. The system worked for a while, as long as the church laws were enforced by the state. People had two choices, conform or be punished. Punishment may be in the form of beheading, burning alive, or banishment to the wild animals. However, as time went on, dissention in the ranks erupted. What ensued was the Great Schism, followed in a few centuries by the Protestant Reformation. Those events culminated in a religious free-for-all. What we have now is 33,000 Christian denominations, each claiming authenticity, and each imparting its special aroma of GUILT; and the beat goes on.
